“Black Angels Will Fly” is a photographic series that centers on Black creatives as divine, angelic figures. This project draws its influence from my lifelong fascination with angelic imagery and theological narratives. Growing up in a deeply Christian household, I was immersed in church culture and spiritual teachings, yet as time passed, I distanced myself from organized religion, and I slowly began to carve out my own spiritual path. Today, my beliefs are rooted in the power of energy, aura, and the unseen forces that guide us.
At the heart of this series is the concept of divine purpose—a belief I hold deeply, one that was instilled in me by my mother, who refers to me as her “guardian angel.” This idea of being a healer, a force of light and love, has shaped my understanding of my place in the world, and I want to reflect that same energy in the individuals I photograph. My aim is to create work that radiates a heavenly aura—an energy that speaks to the strength, beauty, and depth of Black creatives, who too often find themselves underrepresented or misrepresented in mainstream media.
Through this work, I seek to reframe the narratives surrounding Black identity, moving beyond the stereotypes of violence or victimhood that have too long dominated the visual landscape. By portraying Black people as angelic beings, I'm wanting to create opportunities for healing, affirmation, and empowerment. I want these images to serve as a reminder that Black people, like angels, hold a profound sense of purpose, power, and light that the world needs. My dear brothers and sisters are angels on this earth, and I took on the mission to make sure that these black angels will fly.
